Known as Cysus in Roman Period, Çeşme was the port of Eritrai (Eritre); one
of the 12 Ionian cities. Commerce flourished at 8th century B.C. made Çeşme one
of the most important harbours of the Eastern Mediterranean together with Eritre.
Ships travelling between Cyprus, Chios and Çeşme directed wine and slave market
in particular. By being the most west end spit of the İzmir to the Aegean Sea,
Çeşme is one of the most important coastal borders of current marine
transportation. Daily Çeşme-Chios voyages in summer create a bond between
Turkey and Greece.

constructed with a special coating of stone texture are a typical example for "Aegean
Island” houses, the Castle of Çeşme carries Ottoman features…The Castle situated
in an excellent position for controlling the land and sea is built at the early
16th century during the rule of Beyazıt the second. With its rectangular plan,
two nested rows of ramparts forming the Exterior and Interior Castle and six
towers, Castle of Çeşme is the major player virtually!
