Known as CYSSUS in ancient times, Çeşme was Ildırı quay of Erythrai, one of the 12 Ionian cities on the Western shores of Asia Minor in 1000s B.C. Therefore, Çeşme should be considered with its history. An important place in terms of archaelolgy and tourism, ERYTHRAI had major economic power in the 7th and 8th centuries B.C. The city had trade relations with East Mediterranean and Cyprus, and monopolizing slave and wine trade with CHIOS island. ERYTHRAI was first attacked by LYDIA and then The Persians and suffered great destruction but became a rich state agiain in 4th century B.C. The city was under the rule of Pergamum and Roman Empire repectively. Çeşme district was called CYSSUS in Roman times. When The Roman empire was divided, ERYTRAI was in Byzantine territory and lost its importance and most of the ancient buildings in the city were destroyed when polytheistic religions got weaker.
Part of The Byzantine Empire in the middle ages, ERYTHRAI and Çeşme region was captured by The Turks for the first time by ÇAKA BEY. Father in law of 1st Kılıçaslan, ÇAKA BEY captured KALZOMENAI peninsula in 1081 A.D. in Seljuk period. Captured by Yıldırım Beyazıt again in The Otoman times, the city was captured and delivered to Aydınoğulları in 1402 after Ankara War by Timur and captured again by The Ottomans in 1422. Çeşme was occupied by the Greeks when our country was divided after the First World War but General Fahrettin Altay's troops liberated the town from the enemy on 16 September 1922. As the name of the town implies, it has many historic fountains.
CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS ENGAGEMENT FISH:
Family of the man, who is going to be engaged, catches a large fish. This fish can be a large gilthead sea bream, sea bream or sea bass. The fish is embellished by the family of the man, who is going to get engaged, names of the man and the girl are engraved on the fish with bright paper in different motifs. The embellished fish is placed on a tray and sent to the house of the girl with a ceremony. Family of the girl cook the fish and sends a piece of it to the man's house.
DESSERT:
Prepared by the family of the girl, who is going to be engaged. This dessert, which looks like Turkish shortbread but is very difficult and costly to prepare is offered first to the family of the fiancee's family, and then to guests, during and after the wedding. If the dessert is delicious, it makes the girl's family proud.
BREAKING POT:
Pots were broken by hitting them to the ground at wedding and circumcision ceremonies in honor of a person, who was dancing. There used to be pot stores in Çeşme. Number of pots broken while a person is playing used to show that person's esteem and dancing ability.
BAZİNA:
It is a feast, organized by families after tobacco harvest. Guests attend this feast with their wooden spoons.After a special dish, prepared with pastry, ocres and ground meat is had, the date for the next Bazina is determined
